Las Vegas Market extends its design-driven resources with the launch of a new high-end home furnishings floor — including expansions by Four Hands and Hooker Furnishings and debuts by Caracole and Varaluz among others — at the winter 2024 edition, January 28 – February 1, at World Market Center Las Vegas. With the new concentration of 11 better brands nearly filling B2 to capacity, the Market’s 100+ Home Furnishings Temporaries relocate to B6 beginning this winter.

“This infusion and concentration of high-end home furnishings extends the breadth and depth of product offerings and price points available at Las Vegas Market,” said Dorothy Belshaw, ANDMORE Executive Vice President,Chief Growth Officer. “These brands make Las Vegas Market a more comprehensive sourcing destination for designers and retailers alike.”

Elegant Offerings Foster New Sourcing Opportunities

The second floor of Building B at World Market Center Las Vegas is a new at-market destination for high-end sourcing which complements Las Vegas Design Center’s year-round collection of the industry's finest product lines on the first two floors of Building A. The creation of a design-forward home furnishings floor, complete with unique curations for interior designers and retailers, brings five new-to-Las Vegas showrooms, as well as three relocated and expanded showroom updates, to the winter market in January 2024.

New-to-Las Vegas B2 showrooms include A.R.T. Furniture (minimalist interior furnishings and upholstery); Caracole (elevated Earth-toned home furniture); Jonathan Charles (high-end artisan interior furnishings); Rowe (eco-friendly and stain-resistant custom upholstery); and Varaluz (transitional handmade lighting, mirrors and home décor).

Two established LVMKT brands — Four Hands (contemporary home furnishings and handmade art) and Sunpan (tailored indoor/outdoor home furnishings and luxe home décor) –— relocate and expand on B2. Additionally, Hooker Furnishings (upscale interior furnishings) opens a second location at Las Vegas Market, extending its family of brands — Hooker Furniture, Hooker Upholstery, HF Custom, Bradington Young, M, Prime Resource International, Pulaski Furniture, Samuel Lawrence Furniture and Sunset West — across World Market Center Las Vegas’ Buildings A and B.

Temporary Exhibitors Relocate

As part of the B2 remerchandising, the Market’s 100+ temporary home furnishings exhibitors will relocate to B6 beginning in January 2024. Temporary exhibitors represent some 12 categories, including outdoor patio furniture, dining tables, sofas, rustic furniture, home décor and mattress/bedding.

The move gives home furnishings retailers a unique opportunity to source temporary exhibitors alongside permanent showrooms with compatible price points offerings. This synergistic floorplan provides a more comprehensive experience for buyers and suppliers.

“These changes provide a more efficient and effective market experience for our customers,” added Belshaw. “We will continue to iterate – whether through addition of new resources or with remerchandising of existing offerings – to improve Las Vegas Market for exhibitors and attendees.”

After receiving the largest number of entries in over a decade, a panel of industry notables and veteran judges has reviewed the submissions to determine the finalists for the International Society of Furniture Designers’ (ISFD) 2020 Pinnacle Awards. The finalists will be feted during the Pinnacle Awards Online TV Presentation, and the winners announced, on Saturday, October 24 at 6 pm ET, via the organization’s YouTube channel. Acclaimed interior designer Corey Damen Jenkins will keynote the awards ceremony.

“Each year when the submissions arrive, I am more and more impressed with the extraordinary quality of entries and glad that I do not have the judges’ difficult task of selecting the finalists and ultimately the winners,” says John Conrad, executive director. “ISFD really appreciates the time and dedication that the judges devote to the detailed review and evaluation process and I want to extend my gratitude to them for their help and to our sponsors who make this all possible.”

Awards Details

The 2020 finalists, all professional product and furniture designers along with a few design students, envision and create the designs that ultimately become some of the most sought-after home furnishings items around the world. Their works are produced and marketed by companies large and small, but with a common denominator — to proudly illustrate that artistry, craft and innovation are important and quite saleable to the consumer marketplace.
The theme for this year’s Pinnacle Awards Online TV Presentation is “Great Designs Unmasked,” a recognition of the need to change the Pinnacle’s normal gala format for 2020 as well as a chance to reveal to the world the positive impact good design has on mental and physical well-being. Presenters, stationed at design-centric locations around the country, including several High Point locales, will honor nearly 70 finalists in 20 categories. Musical guests, Turpentine Shine, will perform original tunes throughout the one-hour program.

Leading casegoods resource Riverside Furniture has tapped Ken Donham, a 15-year supply chain and operations specialist, as Vice President of Supply Chain, the company announced.

Donham, who has served in supply chain and operational roles for A.R.T. Furniture, Universal, Sun Delivery and Broyhill, will focus on increasing speed-to-market of products to retailers and consumers. “Ken will add significant value by insuring that our best sellers are in stock and that we’re servicing retailers at the highest possible level,” said Fred Henjes, CEO and President.

Donham joins the company after Riverside just opened its second U.S. distribution center last month, a 75,000-square-foot facility in Ridgeway, VA, to improve service to retailers in the Eastern U.S. The company also has a distribution center at its headquarters here and in Vietnam, from which retailers can order mixed containers direct in as small a quantity as 350 cubes.

For the last five years, Donham worked as the director of supply chain for a pharmaceutical company. “I’m excited to get back to the furniture industry, especially to join a company like Riverside with a rich history of providing industry-leading products to our customer partners,” Donham said. “The essence of my job is to listen to our customers and provide what they need. I look forward to strengthening our customer-focused global supply chain and developing solutions that meet the customer’s needs.”

“Having worked with Ken before, I find him to be a leader who thrives on coaching and developing his team. He encourages trust and openness and has a passion for seeing people succeed and grow. We’re confident he will add value to the entire organization,” said John Iasiello, Senior Vice President of strategic planning and business development.

Donham, a graduate of The Citadel in Charleston, SC, will split his time between the Fort Smith headquarters and Riverside’s High Point office. He reports to Beth Brown, Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer.

The Board of Directors at A.R.T. Furniture announced they have reached a mutual agreement with Jeff Cook to step down as CEO of A.R.T. Furniture. Cook leaves the division of Markor International Business for personal reasons. Effective immediately, Jeff Young has been named CEO of A.R.T. Furniture.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Cook for his eight years of service at A.R.T. Furniture,” said Mark Feng, President of Markor International Business Division. “We greatly appreciate Jeff’s loyalty and dedication to the brand, and wish him the best in his future endeavors.”

Young previously served as Markor’s Chief Branding Officer and brings with him vast experience in the home furnishings industry. In addition to leading his family’s Lexington Furniture Industries, Young has held CEO positions at Fine Furniture and Drexel-Heritage. Furthermore, he was appointed CEO for Furniture Brands International’s H.D.M. division, which included oversight of Henredon, Maitland-Smith, Lane Venture, Pearson Upholstery and Hickory Chair. Young is a long term Markor executive, and accomplished CEO who successfully guided the acquisition and transition of Markor owned Schnadig International to Caracole International.

“I would like to formally welcome Jeff Young as he takes the helm at A.R.T. Furniture. Jeff has the leadership skills and operational experience necessary to further drive A.R.T.’s global growth strategy," said Feng. “He has repeatedly exhibited extraordinary product development talent, and has the ability to widen the appeal of the A.R.T. brand.”

We’re back from the fall 2019 High Point Market and our editors were all over town scoping out the latest trends in new and best-selling products. Below are eight trends we spotted across all home categories — some are new and some are old favorites found in new places.

We've created a gallery with even more examples of these trends, so be sure to check that out as well.

1. Warm colors and patterns

Jewel tones are still around this season, but we're seeing them all — green, blue, yellow, pink and orange — in warmer hues. These colors combined with bold patterns — also trending — can help designers apply the layering techniques that we heard about throughout the week.

2. Champagne upholstery

In addition to the warm jewel tones, we noticed champagne upholstery across furniture categories. Soft golden hues with a slight shimmer adorned upholstery in many of the showrooms we visited.

3. Cozy materials

Jaipur Living displayed this new line of chunky textured rugs that resembled cozy sweaters.

Hygge is still hot. We saw boucle textiles and other soft textures adorn everything from sofas to rugs, creating a cozy feel.

4. Multi-faceted

Faceted giraffe accessories from UMA.

From tables and decorative accessories to lighting and even artwork, facets and faceted patterns are making a statement across categories.

5. Woven materials

This Pinnacle Award-winning cabinet from Selamat has caning inlaid among the floral pattern.

Natural materials are still around in a big way, and we’re seeing them displayed on furniture, lighting and decor in caned and woven fashions.

6. Marble

The Keaton Industries collection at Aidan Gray has lamp shades with marble patterns.

Speaking of natural materials, we saw an influx of marble and marble prints on surfaces including tabletops, mirrors and lamps.

7. Animal prints

Animal print made a statement on this table lamp from Regina Andrew.

Animal print has been trending for a while, but we saw it in some unconventional places — on upholstery and pillows, but also lamps and rugs.

8. Sculptural shapes

The cubist console table from Mary McDonald's new collection with Chaddock is the designer's favorite piece in the collection.

Sculptural shapes are adding visual interest to furniture, lighting and decorative accessories. Despite their neutral colors, their bold shapes make a statement.

Academy Award-winning actress Diane Keaton launched her new collection of lighting, Keaton Industries, with Aidan Gray. We got to check out the new line at a press reception Saturday morning. The line of ceiling lights includes bold black and white patterned shades with clean profiles and multiple hanging hardware options.

“Love It or List It” star Hilary Farr came to this market with a number of product launches, including furniture with Braxton Culler, lighting with Grandview Gallery, and rugs with Kaleen Rugs. In the Kaleen showroom, Farr walked us through her rug line, which features a range of styles, patterns and colors, including vibrant colors, soft neutrals, insect patterns, and the Global Altitude collection, which she told us was inspired by her views from airplanes.

The Global Altitude rugs in Farr's line were inspired from aerial views as she has flown across the country.

“Queer Eye” designer Bobby Berk launched his collection with A.R.T. Furniture last market, and while he has nothing new to show this market, he told us he has big plans in store for next April. The big news for Berk at this market is that his newest line is now available at the retail level and has already been scooped up by a major retailer.

Thom Filicia celebrated 10 years with Vanguard Furniture at a party Saturday night.

To celebrate his 10th anniversary with Vanguard Furniture, Thom Filicia debuted a new collection with the company. Also on display in the showroom are 10 pieces from Filicia's original 2009 line that are still in production. Filicia celebrated the anniversary with a party in the showroom Saturday night.

Recent product recalls issued by manufacturers and retailers in conjunction with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) point to the high cost of ignoring the industry’s voluntary stability standard for clothing storage furniture.

Members of the American Home Furnishings Alliance (AHFA) are making it easy for buyers to identify showrooms that carry compliant products by displaying a “WE COMPLY” tent card in their showrooms. The card identifies manufacturers whose products meet requirements of the voluntary stability standard for clothing storage furniture, ASTM F2057-19.

In addition, 13 AHFA member companies have had their stability testing process reviewed by UL (Underwriters Laboratory) as part of the Product Stability Verified program launched last year. Once the testing process has been reviewed by UL, companies submit stability test results for each clothing storage SKU. As those test results are verified, they are posted on the UL Verify website (https://verify.ul.com). Consumers can search the site by manufacturer or by the
product identification number to confirm that a product has received a scientific, third-party confirmation that it meets the stability requirements of the voluntary standard.

Participating companies include A.R.T. Furniture, Ameriwood Home, Ashley Furniture, Delta Children’s Products, Durham
Furniture, Gat Creek, Hooker Furniture, Klaussner Home Furnishings, La-Z-Boy Casegoods, Samson Marketing
(Universal Furniture and Legacy Classic Furniture), Sauder Woodworking, Simmons Kids, South Shore Furniture and
Vaughan-Bassett. These showrooms will display a tent card that says, “WE COMPLY and We’re Verified.”

“Although the stability standard is ‘voluntary,’ AHFA does not consider it optional,” states Bill Perdue, AHFA Vice President of regulatory affairs. AHFA developed the “WE COMPLY” campaign to help broaden industry awareness of the stability standard and to emphasize the importance of eliminating non-compliant products from the marketplace. AHFA also endorses the Stability Verified program for brands seeking credible, third-party verification of compliance.

ASTM International adopted the furniture stability standard, F2057, in 2000. It originally covered units over 30 inches in height but was updated earlier this year to include all residential clothing storage furniture 27 inches and taller.

Companies that display the “WE COMPLY” card have engineered their products to pass two stability performance tests outlined in the voluntary standard. Covered products also must carry a specified warning label to help alert consumers to tip-over hazards, and they must be shipped with tip restraints along with instructions for installing the restraints. (All tip restraints must comply with a separate standard, F3096.)

To pass the stability performance tests, an empty unit cannot tip when all doors (if any) are open and all drawers are open to the “stop,” or open two-thirds of the way if there is no “stop.” Covered units also cannot tip when one drawer is open to the “stop” (or two-thirds of the way if there is no “stop”) and a 50-pound weight is applied to the center front of the open drawer. This second test is repeated for each drawer (and door, if any) in the unit.

In February, CPSC Deputy Executive Director DeWane Ray advised the industry that products failing to meet the voluntary stability standard would be deemed a “substantial product hazard” by CPSC. The agency’s enforcement team will consider noncompliant products “as having a defect which could present a substantial product hazard” under the Consumer Product Safety Act, he added. “Should we encounter such products, we shall initiate an investigation and will
seek the corrective action we believe is appropriate.”

Those corrective actions frequently include a recall. Manufacturers or retailers who fail to report non-compliant furniture can be subject to civil penalties.

Earlier this year, CPSC officials purchased 187 clothing storage units from online sources, then tested them for compliance with the voluntary stability standard. At AHFA’s Regulatory Summit earlier this month, CPSC staffer Michael Taylor, who serves as the agency’s tip-over project manager, said the agency focused on purchasing units identified as “best sellers.”

Taylor reported about 9 percent of the units failed the stability tests. So far three recalls appear to have resulted from the testing.

AHFA has worked with furniture manufacturers, the CPSC and child safety experts for nearly two decades on safety measures, including the ASTM voluntary stability standard, designed to increase the stability of residential furniture and to reduce the number of furniture tip-over accidents.

The High Point Premarket Committee has finalized its list of sponsoring showrooms for the fall 2019 event, scheduled for Sept. 9-10. Consisting of 17 sponsors, the list includes 13 returning exhibitors from spring and four new exhibitors.

A biannual tradition, Premarket is designed to provide a select group of furniture retailers with a precursory look at the product introductions set to debut at the upcoming High Point Market. These extended appointments allow attending retailers to experience a more in-depth showroom visit and frees up their schedule when they return to High Point during market to be able to visit other vendors, thus allowing them to visit a larger group of exhibitors overall.

The Premarket sponsor list expands considerably this fall with the return of A.R.T. and Palliser Furniture, who did not participate in the spring because of work being done on their spaces. The Premarket Committee has also added Hillsdale Furniture and Vanguard Furniture as new sponsors, who will participate in September as official sponsors for the first time.

“We are very excited to have our strongest lineup of sponsors in perhaps the history of Premarket," said Doug Bassett, chairman of the Premarket Committee. "With the return of A.R.T and Palliser and with the addition of Hillsdale Furniture and Vanguard Furniture, we will have the most diverse and impressive array of exhibitors and new introduction in many years."

Premarket takes place each spring and fall, about six weeks in advance of High Point Market. Each sponsoring exhibitor commits to providing a near market-ready amount of product. They also pool resources to bring selected retailers for a preview of goods and the opportunity for final tweaking of product details. The event is organized by a committee of sponsoring showrooms, who then contracts with the High Point Market Authority to provide strategic direction, staffing and logistical support.

Designed as an invite-only event, attendees consist of furniture retailer stores who are existing clients of the sponsoring showrooms. Retailers interested in attending a future event should contact the sponsoring manufacturers with which they currently do business to discuss.
