I think that with all of this sheltering-in-place is making us re-access our outdoor spaces, at least those of us have a little patch of green. Consider adding some exterior lighting, it has a lot of benefits. The biggest one being that you can create outdoor rooms, expanding the living space. During this pandemic, we are staying close to home as much as possible, and the walls of our homes can start to feel like they are closing in on us. Having a refuge outside can really make a difference. Some people with sufficient yard space are adding little auxiliary buildings that can serve as offices. This is a good idea, especially as we learn how to work from home for the time being, and most likely into the future.

If you do decide to add one of these getaway spaces, lighting-wise, treat them like a room in your home. Get some ambient light in there, along with task, accent and decorative. Don’t just plug in a desk lamp.

This Balinese teahouse (shown above) came as a kit, like something from Ikea. Its only 10 x10 feet, but because it has a high ceiling and three floor-to-ceiling glass walls, it feels much larger. All lighting was added. The ceiling has four sections that slope inward toward the center apex. A large pendant fixture hangs down from that intersection. A floor lamp adds another layer of inviting illumination to the mix.

Along the perimeter of the pitched ceiling, indirect LED lighting was installed to create calming ambient illumination. A color temperature of 2400 K with a CRI of 93 was selected to warm up the space. It is the color of dimmed incandescent. It enhances the look of the wood. If you look outside, the color of the light is cooler (3000 K) to keep the plantings looking healthy and vibrant. The juxtaposition of the two different color temperatures adds to the allure of the garden. Snow looks particularly good under a cooler color temperature. Nobody likes yellow snow.

For this project, surface mounted directional fixtures have been installed under the eaves of the teahouse, directing light onto the foliage from above. This technique works nicely for snowy areas, as well as homes where there are kids or pets that might knock over luminaires that are installed at ground level.

Speaking of where you install the lighting, it really depends on what kind winters occur in your part of the country. Places that have snow, should not install pathway lighting which is close to the ground. It will simply get buried if the snow is more than 12 inches deep. It’s better to install this task lighting in the trees, under eaves or use tall bollard fixtures which direct light downwards.

Both the lighting for the teahouse and the landscape lighting are controlled by a wireless dimming system. There is a controller installed on the wall next to the back door and there is a hand-held device in the teahouse.

Another advantage of adding illumination is that it keeps the windows from becoming ‘black mirrors’ at night. This is where you end up seeing your own reflection instead of the view beyond. By adding more light outside than inside the windows become increasingly transparent, like they are during the day. This also increases your sense of safety because you’re not looking out into the inky darkness. Plus, it visually expands the interior spaces at night, so that the inside of the house feels less confining, especially now, while we are sheltering-in-place. Even if you only have a balcony, the feeling of expanded space can really lessen your feeling of confinement.

In the image above, wooden steps lead up to a 9-foot tall, framed mirror which is mounted on the property line fence. It gives the illusion of a doorway with another garden beyond. Lighting installed in the taller trees and under the eaves of the teahouse wash the area with an intriguing pattern of light and shadow.

The direction of light also plays a role. Take a look at these three images below. Each shows a different way of illuminating the same section of a stone wall. The change is quite dramatic. None of these are a wrong choice. It just depends on if you want to make it a feature wall or you want is to fade into the background. Plus, do you want to enhance the texture of the stonework or even it out? This the transformative magic of lighting.

Summertime is best spent outdoors, drinking in fresh air, soaking up vitamin D through the sun’s nourishing rays, dining al fresco, and… well, I would say socializing, but this summer it’s better to keep things socially distant.

In fact, because of the pandemic, and the necessity of staying at home much more than we are accustomed to, sprucing up your outdoor space, no matter how big or small, has become more essential than ever. Even the tiniest balcony becomes a natural refuge when you’re used to being indoors all day.

Time spent outdoors does wonders for our mental and physical health, so consider your investment in a homey, welcoming space as part of your self-care for summer.

The season has only just begun. This is the perfect time to give your outdoor space a little love. Whether you’re in need of a full redesign or modest yet meaningful improvements, and no matter your personal style aesthetic, there are a multitude of creative and stylish ways to enhance your space.

As always, I encourage you to focus your search on companies using responsibly-sourced materials and sustainable practices as often as possible.

Creating welcoming living spaces outside gives you more flexibility for regenerative time alone or (when the pandemic is over) hosting seasonal events. Thanks to modern technology, you can create the best of indoor spaces outdoors as well, from natural kitchens to dining and living rooms, and beyond.

Tables in teak or aluminum make lovely choices for outdoor eating arrangements when paired with the perfect dining chairs. You’ll be wanting to dine al fresco as often as possible once you have the perfect outdoor eatery set up! Utility tables or consoles make handy buffets or beverage stations.

If space permits, I adore an outdoor living room set-up, which truly brings in the indoors out. Sofa configurations come in every size and shape imaginable, ready to be paired with weather-friendly and stylish coffee tables and side tables to create inviting and comfortable spaces.

For other occasional seating, you can choose from a seemingly infinite number of styles. Gone are the days of being limited in the outdoor design world. Whether you prefer rocking chairs, loungy chaises, dreamy daybeds, barstools, armchairs, cozy swings or playfully eccentric styles, there’s something for everyone. Or, for a more bohemian vibe, hammocks made from recycled fabrics make an undeniably comfortable and chic selection.

Create enhanced comfort and add interesting textures to your design with outdoor-friendly rugs, pillows and blankets.

There is no limit to creative and visually powerful ways to light your outdoor space, making it welcoming even after the sun sets.

Choose from dramatic wicker lanterns, modern table lamps, wind-resistant candlelight, earthy hurricane lanterns, futuristic garden lamps, or a romantic fire pit to warm up your surroundings and make them glow.

Biophilic elements such as carefully curated plant displays or beautifully blooming gardens bring more serenity to your surroundings and provide many health and wellness benefits.

The HKTDC Hong Kong International Lighting Fair (Spring Edition) will take place from April 6 to 9 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center. More than 1,400 exhibitors from nine countries and regions are expected at this year’s fair, offering global buyers an exclusive sourcing platform for all finished lighting products, parts and accessories. Last year, the fair welcomed close to 21,000 buyers from 137 countries and regions. Building Future with Environmental and Smart Lighting HKTDC Research revealed that Hong Kong’s total exports of lighting products accounted for HKD89 billion in 2018, the majority of which were exported to the US (35%), the EU (21.2%), and Mainland China (15.7%).

As for product trends, the DIY lighting market is booming, particularly in North America and Western Europe.

Decorative: Track lights, linear lights, spotlights of novelty designs, are trending.
Energy Efficient: Higher energy efficiency and longer lifetime lighting products are also on the upswing this year. Many countries, including Australia, the EU, the US and the Chinese mainland, have phased out imports and sales of most incandescent light bulbs, creating even more demand for energy-efficient items such as integrated electronic compact fluorescent lamps, LED lamps and lighting.
Smart Home: Smart living style, including smart lighting systems and the technology to connect different devices and appliances at home, and through mobile devices is of interest to consumers.

Thematic Zones

Innobuild, a brand-new Thematic Zone designed for the smart living trend, will be presented in the fair. It introduces a groundbreaking initiative for building technology, showcasing practical construction tools, as well as smart and green building materials and hardware.

The Hall of Aurora will continue to be the spotlight of the fair, showcasing eye-catching and forward-looking quality lighting products and technology from approximately 200 top-notch brands around the world. Leading brands include MLS, MOSO Electronics and SKY-LIGHTING.

Another highlight of the fair is the Smart Lighting & Solutions Zone, which will return to showcase advanced lighting systems, remote control and smart lighting solutions, with a special focus on “IoT Lighting Supply Chain” organized by the Shanghai Pudong Intelligent Lighting Association. The upcoming Spring Lighting Fair will continue to present a wide assortment of smart, energy-saving lighting products, systems and accessories in different specialty zones by their applications: Residential Lighting, Technical Lighting and Urban & Architectural Lighting, Advertising Display Lighting, Avenue of Chandeliers, Commercial Lighting, Decorative Lighting and Lighting Accessories. These thematic zones provide buyers with convenience in sourcing their targeted lighting products and meet their potential suppliers.

Exhibitors

With energy efficiency a significant trends in the global lighting industry, smart lighting technology with significant energy saving is in the limelight this spring. DIMON Technology Limited (Booth no.: 1C-F02) will introduce its NANO lighting control system specially designed in the UK (England). This controller uses open and interoperable ZigBee® standards-based technology—the NANO communicates with standards compliant sensors, switches, ballasts and LED drivers to transform basic room controls into a completely wireless control solution with an IOT OS System. Smart Light pole integrates smart-city functions including street lighting control system, Wifi antenna base station, video monitoring management, advertising screen broadcast control system, real-time monitoring of urban environment with applications such as emergency call systems, water level monitoring, charging pile systems and manhole cover monitoring systems, making it a one-stop big data platform.

The new zone, Innobuild, will feature innovative building materials offering alternative and creative home furniture and technology for better living style. Wedi building material from Ever Crown Engineering Limited is an example. Wedi is a revolutionary building material, which is imported from Germany, 100% waterproof, sturdy, lightweight and can be cut into any desirable size and shape. With its flexibility and special features, it is designed to provide quicker, lighter and more efficient solution in wet areas such as bathrooms or steam rooms.

Aluminum furniture is a trend to watch at this market. Dali Town Participation from Foshan will feature advanced, innovative and eco-friendly applications of aluminum for interior and outdoor structures at Innobuild. Produced by Foshan PAKFEN Home Technology Co., Ltd., the aluminum furniture is durable, fireproof, waterproof and can be customized in different styles, colors and textures. The aluminum furniture can even be customized to look like wood.

Events

In addition to the broad spectrum of lighting products, a series of events will be held during the fair period to unveil industry trends and facilitate intellectual exchange among industry players. One of the events is the Asian Lighting Forum, which will be held on 6 April 2019 at the Stage in Hall 3C at the fairground. Co-organized by HKTDC, the Hong Kong Electronics & Technologies Association and The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers – Electronics Division, the Forum will cover the industry’s hottest topic, connected lighting, and will feature speakers from OSRAM, Signify, illumination Physics, Tridonic, LEDinside and more. Since smart lighting is the industry focus, another inspirational forum on Smart Lighting: IoT and Its Supply Chain will be held on 7 April 2019 in the same location. Ten speakers from the industry’s leading companies such as Arm, JD Cloud, Alibaba A.I. Labs, BroadLink, Gizwits and more will share their insights on this timely topic.

This series of informative events will present enormous business opportunities to buyers and exhibitors. In addition, onsite social events such as a networking reception will be good platforms for meeting valuable business contacts.

Go Greener Yet Enhance Connections

The HKTDC Marketplace App introduces the new “e-Business Card” function, which facilitates the connection between buyers and exhibitors to make new real-time contacts by simply scanning the contact’s QR code. To most homeowners, outdoor lighting means a pair of decorative wall sconces by the front door, a few lights along the walkway and perhaps floodlights for security. Exterior lighting can do much more. It can make even a modest property look very attractive at night, increasing the home’s visual appeal and making it more salable in this buyer’s market.

Also, outdoor lighting can make a yard a more enjoyable place to spend time. And surprisingly, exterior lights even can make the interior of a home seem larger and more pleasant. Here’s why: When there’s little or no exterior lighting, windows become black mirrors at night for people inside, making the interior seem smaller and more closed in. By illuminating outdoor areas beyond the windows and glass doors, people see past their own reflections into the outside landscaping. Outdoor lighting can make your home a bit safer too, by deterring burglars.

Mix it up: Outdoor Lighting techniques

The secret to attractive outdoor lighting is using a mixture of different lights and lighting techniques. This keeps the decorative fixtures from being too overwhelming and the landscape lighting from looking like a miniature golf course.

Doorway lighting

Most houses already have one or two fixtures mounted beside the front door. Many homeowners put uncomfortably bright bulbs inside these fixtures, thinking that more light is better. It really just creates more glare and causes the decorative fixtures to take over visually. Instead, install 25W or 40W bulbs to illuminate entryways while minimizing harsh glare and shadows. LED bulbs are now available in traditional shapes, including flame tip. You can get the light output of the 25W to 40W bulb, while only consuming 4W to 6W worth of power. They also last 25,000 hours, as compared to a traditional incandescent bulb, which has a life of 750-2,000 hours. There are even LED bulbs that create the effect of gas flame. Note that they look best in lanterns that have clear or seeded glass. If you put them in a fixture with frosted glass, it just looks like the lantern is having a seizure.

Should you be adding or replacing doorway fixtures, don’t be afraid to “buy big.” Fixtures that seem substantial in the store often look too small when actually installed on your house. Consider borrowing a couple of samples from your local lighting store in two different sizes to see which one looks right from the street. It’s best if you have someone holding up the light fixture up against the house while you go out into the street. You really need to get far enough away to get a good sense of how the scale of the fixture relates to the façade of the house.

Uplighting

These accent lights are positioned on or in the ground and pointed up to dramatically illuminate lawn features such as trees, sculpture or gazebos. Uplights that are recessed into the ground are known as well lights. Ones that are mounted above grade are called ground-mounted directional fixtures. Choose directional lights with hoods or shades so that you don’t see distractingly bright “hot spots” when you look out the window. Use uplights to highlight the yard’s most neatly pruned trees and shrubs, giving them a sculptural quality. Position three uplights around a tree or shrub that’s in the middle of the yard. Use one or two lights if the tree or shrub is located along a fence or next to the home. I favor above-grade uplights over well lights. They’re easier to reposition as a tree continues to grow, and they tend to last longer. Position above-grade uplights behind small plants or shrubs, ideally in mulch beds, to keep them out of view. Uplights and other landscape lighting can be wired in series, with each light connected to another light in the vicinity, and ultimately wired into a transformer, which is located either inside or outside your home. There are some pretty good solar-powered adjustable uplights in the shape of rocks. No wiring required.

Silhouetting

Also known as backlighting, silhouetting is a dramatic uplighting technique appropriate when shrubs or trees with strong sculptural shapes, such as magnolias or evergreens, are located in front of a wall or fence. For this application, a row of uplights is aimed to illuminate the wall or fence behind these trees or shrubs to achieve the desired “wallwashing” effect. The distance between uplights generally should be equal to the distance between the uplights and the wall for the most even illumination.

Path lighting

Path lighting makes strolling on walkways safer after dark, but handled improperly, path lights can make a yard look like an airport runway. To help mitigate this effect, vary the side of the walkway that path lights are placed on, and vary the distance between lights. This creates visual interest and breaks up the runway effect. For safety, place a path light at any point in the walkway where there is a step or change in surface. Select opaque mushroom-type or directional path lights that project light only down. These provide safety without calling excessive attention to themselves.

It used to be that solar-powered path lights were not ideal. They often are underpowered, particularly if trees or the house itself blocks the sun part of the day. However, solar path lights are easy to install and free to operate. If you use them, choose those that project the light only downward. Whether you are using solar-powered pathway lights are not, definitely look for the LEDs versions now, in the 2700K to 3000K range. 2700K is the color of incandescent light at full brightness and 3000K is the color of halogen light at full brightness. Also look for fixtures that have a CRI of 90 or higher. This tells you how close the quality of the light is to that of incandescent.

Downlighting

Downlighting is a good way to light outdoor activity areas, such as outdoor dining tables or cooking areas. They are also very good at lighting planting areas and for projecting a wash of light across grassy areas. Downlights can be mounted on eaves, trellises, gazebos or the branches of mature trees. Their cords can be run down the side of the tree that is viewed least often and held in place by large galvanized staples. Use adjustable straps specifically designed for this purpose to hang lights from trees. If you must screw downlights to branches, use galvanized screws, which are less likely than other types of metal screws to harm the trees.

Moonlighting

Moonlighting is a special downlighting technique. Downlights are hung on tree branches above the lowest branches so that the light filters through the leaves of those low branches, creating a dappled, natural-looking light-and-shadow effect. Other lights might be mounted in these trees, pointed up to highlight the foliage canopy. Mount these lights around 10 to 12 feet up, where they are above the lowest branches but still easy to reach with a standard ladder.

Picking Bulbs

Halogen bulbs traditionally have been used in landscape lighting, but recent advances in LED lights make them the best alternative. LED fixtures are comparable in cost of the old halogens, and they’re more energy-efficient, more reliable in cold weather and can last more than 10 times as long. Make sure to select ones that are rated to be used in enclosed fixtures. Fluorescent bulbs usually are best avoided. They often create light of an unpleasant color and fail in cold weather.

Power Options

Outdoor lighting is available in 120V or 12V systems. The 12V systems are the best choice for most homeowners because they usually can be installed without hiring an electrician and without adding additional circuits to your electrical panel. The cords typically are buried, but if you use a 12V system they don’t pose a safety risk and need not be buried very deep. Transformers are about the size of a half-gallon milk carton. They can be placed in garages or basements, attached to exterior walls or located discreetly in the yard. Lights positioned more than 75 feet from a transformer sometimes are dimmer than those located closer. Installing multiple transformers is one way to solve this problem. LED systems have much less of a chance of having this issue, referred to as voltage drop, because they consume less power for the same amount of lumen output.

Remember, you can’t just choose one of these from the list. You have to use a combination of light sources to create a subtly dramatic and enticing sense of welcome for your home. The bottom line is investing in the outside of your home is money well spent. And while the gratification may not be instant, it's pretty darn close.
