The International Interior Design Association (IIDA) is honored to announce the winners of the 2023 IIDA Latin America Design Awards (LADA), a competition that recognizes, honors, and celebrates outstanding interior design and interior architecture projects representing the highest level of creativity, originality, and design excellence in the Latin America and Caribbean regions.

“The Latin America region contains a wealth of designers and visionaries that weave form, function, culture, and materials together that fuel and impress the global design community,” said IIDA Executive Vice President and CEO, Cheryl S. Durst, Hon. FIIDA. “IIDA wants to recognize and celebrate these forward-thinking winners as part of our larger mission to connect designers around the world and amplify their creativity and craft.”

Entries were juried by a panel of design professionals, including Jones Lang Lasalle (JLL) Vice President, Project & Development Services, Ronnie Belizaire, FIIDA; Collins Cooper Carusi Partner, Fiona Grandowski, IIDA, AIA; and Hickok Cole Associate Principal and Director of Interiors, Mike Johnson II, IIDA, AIA, NOMA.

“Each of the winning projects speaks to its location and purpose,” said Johnson on behalf of the jury. “The resulting creations are inspiring, expressive, and perfectly of place.”

The International Interior Design Association (IIDA) is honored to announce the winners of the 2023 IIDA Showroom and Booth Design Competition for their originality of design, visual impact, and effective use of materials. Criteria for the annual competition are based on the outstanding use of space, color, texture, lighting, and graphics in showrooms and booths at NeoCon.

“NeoCon offers some of the year’s most innovative showcases, evident in this year’s entries,” said IIDA Executive Vice President and CEO, Cheryl S. Durst, Hon. FIIDA. “IIDA is excited to see this creativity and design insight, as it displays what designers and manufacturers alike are envisioning and driving towards.”

Competition entries were judged by a jury panel of industry experts, including Stantec Associate and Interior Designer, Jill Dexter, IIDA, RID; FORTYSEVEN Founder and Chief Strategist, Yana Ronin, IIDA; Gresham Smith Interior Designer, Midori Shim, IIDA, RID; and Corporate Environments International, LLC Director of Sales, Cyd Shizuru, Ind. IIDA.

“There is so much thought that must go into these unique, clever spaces,” said Dexter on behalf of the jury. “Each winner exemplifies the bright future of our industry and wowed us on how every inch of space must celebrate and spotlight the product while captivating and motivating the visitor to engage all at once.”

With a focus on futurism, IIDA returns to this year's NeoCon with an exciting lineup of keynotes, panels, roundtables, and celebrations that aim to empower its global membership – and the commercial interior design industry at large – to actively shape the future of the built environment. The NeoCon conference is held annually at theMART (222 W. Merchandise Mart Plaza) in downtown Chicago, with IIDA programming starting Sunday, June 11, leading into the three-day conference taking place from Monday, June 12 to Wednesday, June 14.

“As an organization, we are molding the next generation of humanity-focused industry leaders, and NeoCon provides an ideal platform to explore how design is driving change, breaking boundaries, promoting diversity, and serving as a conduit for connection,” said IIDA Executive Vice President and CEO, Cheryl S. Durst, Hon. FIIDA. “By staying curious about new technologies, methodologies, and community engagement, we can make the future of placemaking less about the fear of the unknown and more about the excitement of what's to come."

IIDA Showroom and Booth Design Competition: Shown onsite at NeoCon, all winning exhibition spaces from the competition will be reviewed and selected by a jury of influential design leaders to be displayed during the conference. The competition recognizes outstanding and innovative corporate branding initiatives in showrooms as well as temporary booths and pop-ups, with an emphasis on the innovative use of materials, space, color, texture, product, and environmental graphics. Submissions close June 3.

IIDA Annual Meeting: IIDA members and guests will kick-off NeoCon by gathering to honor the 2023-24 International Board of Directors, 2023 College of Fellows inductees, IIDA Foundation Honorees, as well as the Member, and Student of the Year. Space is limited.

Revel in Design: IIDA’s Black-tie Event: The organization’s annual black-tie event marks the celebration commencement to NeoCon, inviting the industry’s top international interior designers and global design manufacturers for an evening of networking, dinner, and dancing. The event honors the winners of two of the most prestigious competitions in the interior design profession—the annual Interior Design Competition and the Will Ching Design Competition. NeoCon Keynote: Designing a Way Forward: A keynote presentation with world-renowned Futurist as well as Future Today Institute Founder and CEO, Amy Webb will provide strategic foresight and forecasting crucial for organizations to ensure sustained success as they navigate today’s era of unprecedented transformation, while preparing for the complexities of the future. Amy will lead an extraordinary exploration into the emerging trends and technologies turning industries on their heads. Q&A will be moderated by IIDA Executive Vice President and CEO, Cheryl S. Durst, Hon. FIIDA. Registration is required.

Collective Design Live: Beyond Futurism: Future Today Institute Senior Foresight Manager Mark Bryan will moderate a panel of futurists and design strategy leaders to break down the essential components of thinking and working like a futurist, starting today. Program attendees will learn how to adopt and apply futurism, and further learn how the built environment helps us be more connected, engaged, and collaborative with a clear vision for personal and professional growth.

IIDA + OFS Student Roundtable: IIDA and OFS will host an intimate conversation with design students and emerging designers by bringing together a panel of designers and thought leaders to discuss sustainability – a topic the next generation of designers are passionate about. DYW Screening and Discussion: IIDA members and Executive Vice President and CEO, Cheryl S. Durst, Hon. FIIDA will host a discussion and screening of a short film featuring the IIDA Design Your World program—an education initiative designed to provide early exposure to interior design careers for diverse high-schoolers. 2023 marks the Design Your World’s third iteration with programs in Chicago, Miami and now St. Louis launching this summer. The programs provide opportunities and pathways for students that may otherwise not be exposed to careers in design, with the goal of promoting equity and diversity in the industry.

IIDA Student Design Charette: Educator and IIDA member-nominated IIDA Student members from around the country will compete in this live, annual design competition during NeoCon. Students will have just a few hours to determine a design solution, develop a presentation, and pitch their concept to a panel of design leaders, with an awards celebration to follow. The event’s presenting sponsor is MillerKnoll, with Behr as hospitality sponsor and the Wallcoverings Association as supporting sponsor.
Time: Charette: 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.; Presentations and Judging: 3 – 5 p.m.

IIDA is pleased to announce the Transformational and Innovation Award winners and the Best of Competition winner for the 2022 IIDA Healthcare Design Awards. The Transformational and Innovation Award winners are Gensler for the Bill Richards Center For Healing (Rockville, MA) and NBBJ for the Seattle Children’s Odessa Brown Children’s Clinic (Seattle). This year’s Best of Competition winner is HGA for the firm’s Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center (Akron, OH).

The IIDA Healthcare Design Awards recognize firms for creative design of healthcare facilities across seven categories within Hospitals, Extended Care and Assisted Living Facilities, and Ambulatory. In addition to the above awards, Gensler, HGA, and NBBJ were named category winners for their respective projects including Ambulatory, Specialty Clinic; Hospitals, Community; and Ambulatory, Pediatric.

“HGA’s Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center project exemplifies the successful intersection of functionality and form as the Best of Competition winner,” said IIDA Executive Vice President and CEO, Cheryl S. Durst, Hon. FIIDA. “Additionally, the visionary designers at Gensler and NBBJ were both deserving of the Transformational and Innovation Award with their impressive ability to integrate advanced technology with patient-centric healing environments.”

Projects were reviewed by a panel of healthcare design professionals, including former President of IIDA’s New York chapter, Elsie St. Léger, IIDA; HDR Senior Interior Designer Professional Associate, Kelley Dorsett, IIDA, CHID; and AECOM Senior Vice President and Interior Design Director, Americas, Brett A. Shwery, FIIDA, AAIA, CID.

“While this year’s submissions were highly impressive, the Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center stood out as an exceptional example of thoughtful, patient-forward space planning,” Dorsett said on behalf of the jury. “The three specialty award winners this year brought a rejuvenated perspective to healthcare design, and we’re honored to recognize all of them.”

All winners were announced at an IIDA reception at IIDA Headquarters in Chicago on November 17.

IIDA has announced the winners of the 2022 IIDA/HD Expo Product Design Awards. The prestigious competition honored products that excelled across seven criteria including aesthetics, cost and value, design innovation, environmental responsibility, need, technical advancements, and usage. This year, entries were judged in person by a panel of notable design industry professionals.

"The focus on comfort and connection with the user are key to the hospitality industry’s success,” said IIDA Executive Vice President and CEO Cheryl S. Durst, Hon. FIIDA. “This year’s winning selections offer all of these elements and more as designers, manufacturers, and the industry continue to anticipate and exceed guest expectations.”

This year’s jury of design professionals included HGA Senior Interior Designer and Associate Vice President Mari Ansera, IIDA, NOMA; Perkins&Will Senior Associate and Senior Interior Designer Mike Johnson II, IIDA; and One Line Design Studio LLC Project Designer Jason Valentin, IIDA.

IIDA has announced the winners of the 2021 IIDA Showroom & Booth Design Competition. This competition recognizes originality of design, visual impact, effective use of materials and the outstanding use of space, color, texture, lighting and graphics in showrooms and booths at NeoCon.

“It is exciting to witness how firms and manufacturers continue to evolve their products and displays in order to stay nimble with the changing landscape and exceed expectations for the attendee experience,” said IIDA Executive Vice President and CEO Cheryl S. Durst, Hon. FIIDA. “This year’s winners demonstrated an exceptional use of thought and creativity that humanized the way we think about design.”

The jury panel reviewing this year’s competition included: Jamie Cavalier, IIDA, Fitwel Amb., LEED GA, Designer + Project Manager, BOX Studios; Karie Vagedes, IIDA, Senior Associate, Huntsman Architectural Group; and Sarah Kuchar, IIDA, Owner, Creative Director, Kuchar.
