Last Look: Raili Clasen's Take on Mid-Century Modern

RailiCA stems from former fashion exec Raili Clasen’s love for eclectic California interior design. After a career with Quiksilver and Paul Frank, Clasen co-founded housewares brand Alice Supply Co. The move into interior design came naturally after her home projects were featured in magazines, design blogs and her own homes showcased on the Newport Harbor Home tour.

1. In this mid-century modern home, the built-ins were already part of the house. We gave them a fresh coat of dark charcoal paint for a completely new personality after deciding to give the shelving its own “space” within the room. Painting them white would not have given the built-in unit that uniqueness, as so much of the rest of the space was white. Instead, the shelving matches the attached office (not shown). With this treatment for the built-ins, we were able to divide up the living room and office spaces without additional walls. 2. As for the furnishings, we wanted the furniture lines to reflect the mid-century vibe of this home as well. But as we all know, vintage modern sofas are not exactly comfy cozy. We had a custom sofa made with the clean lines of a modern sofa but definitely much softer and more comfortable. Our goal was to stay true to the clean and linear shapes of true mid-century furniture, but a bit less angular. The Eames lounger had to be a part of this space, so we took cues from the lines of that chair for the custom sofa as well. The round coffee table anchors all the pieces together. 3. The ceiling detail is original and was already painted white, so we did not have the luxury of changing and stripping the paint away to expose the natural wood. However, the white beams worked well with the feel of this space. My favorite part of this room is all of the beautiful steel windows. Light comes flooding into the entire space, and the age of the windows sets the tone for the modern space.
