Lighting designer Nathan Orsman has a unique talent for bringing intrigue to unproactive spaces. Here, the Australian-born designer walks us through his process of lighting this stately outdoor pool and lounge area.

1. When lighting pools, we take into consideration the perspective from which the pool will be primarily viewed. In this case, it’s between the pool and the house and back over the Long Island Sound. Small LEDs were installed at the correct heights so that the pool is as evenly illuminated as possible. Water disperses light in a wonderful way, and the lighting here, shown in blue, can change color but is primarily used as shown or in warm white.

2. A large amount of what you see in this image is LED. In the door arches, for instance, a tiny .25-inch-wide LED is cored up into the wood header so it is not at all obvious by day and allowed us to maintain the existing structure without the need for a bulky, old-fashioned fixture.

3. We utilize luxe, rechargeable outdoor lanterns, lamps and other moveable pieces, such as those from NEOZ (www.neoz.us), to add another layer. They come in large, rechargeable trays and last more than 72 hours. This is a great way to throw a party without the worry of candles, especially in this particularly windy waterside residence.
