In the dynamic world of design and retail, trends come and go, but one category that has consistently resonated with both retailers and designers is botanicals. Their natural appeal not only adds aesthetic beauty, but also provides important functional benefits. Terrie Ward, Interior Design Consultant, says, “Everyone loves botanicals! There’s no better attention-grabber for a retail space, an entry space — any space.”

Let’s explore the enduring charm of botanicals and why this category continues to be so popular for both seasoned designers and retailers.

The Allure of Botanicals: A Timeless Appeal

Botanicals, characterized by the incorporation of natural elements such as plants, flowers and greenery, have an enduring charm that transcends design trends. Their perennial popularity can be attributed to a combination of aesthetic, psychological and practical factors.

Aesthetic Beauty

Botanicals bring the outdoors inside, infusing spaces with a sense of freshness and vitality. The vibrant colors and organic shapes of plants and flowers create a visually pleasing atmosphere that resonates with everyone, regardless of design preference. Whether used in home decor or commercial spaces, the aesthetic beauty of botanicals adds an inviting touch, creating an atmosphere of tranquility and harmony.

Lindsey Bongiorno, Buyer for Potato Barn Unique Home Furnishings, notes, “The botanical category, specifically Kalalou’s botanica collection, does so well for us, not only because it’s beautiful, but because it’s also unique and versatile. Customers always comment on how different it is from other florals they’ve seen.”

Jody Glanton, Retail Manager of Casa Décor, works with the colors of botanicals to complement the hues of the room and create seasonal ambience. “We typically purchase them four times a year to coordinate with the seasons.”

Ward adds that from a design perspective, botanicals can’t be undervalued. “High-quality botanicals are a must-have if you truly want to finish a space like a pro.”

Softening Accessories

In the realm of interior design, botanicals serve as a versatile tool to complement accessories and furnishings. Glanton says, “Botanicals can help soften the sharp contrasts that may exist within a room.” The natural textures and hues of plants provide a counterbalance to the angularity and rigidity of furniture, making spaces feel more inviting and comfortable. By strategically placing botanical elements, designers can create a harmonious blend of softness and structure, achieving a well-balanced and visually appealing environment.

Drawing Customers Deeper

For larger furniture stores and retail spaces, the strategic placement of botanicals becomes a powerful tool to enhance traffic flow. By creating designated zones adorned with greenery, designers can guide customers through the store seamlessly. Bongiorno explains, “Since they’re so eye-catching, botanicals help keep customers intrigued as they wander throughout the store.”

Glanton explains that arrangements set up in the store also help customers take notice of the furniture. People are drawn in deeper, enticed to explore beyond the entrance. This not only boosts the likelihood of additional purchases, but also enhances the overall customer experience. The result is an immersive and enjoyable shopping experience that promotes longer dwell times and increased engagement.

Variety Adds Appeal

Because tastes vary, offering design options is key, explains Ward. “Don’t be afraid to put together a variety of ready-to-go arrangements for your customers,” she suggests. “You need to have something for everyone. This creates an opportunity for your customers to immediately upgrade their personal spaces without struggling over what might seem an overwhelming decision. If they love it, they’ll buy it.”

Bongiorno agrees. “From just a few stems in a simple vase to an entire bouquet in a more elaborate planter, botanicals can fit anyone’s budget and style,” she notes.
