Currey & Company is debuting a new petite shade collection at High Point Market, designed to add style to any space by introducing color and texture. Fashioned for chandeliers, lanterns and wall sconces, the shades come in a variety of materials including grasscloth, block-printed cotton, and marbleized paper. There are two shapes – tapered and drum. The material is held taut on a wire frame to minimize hardware reflectivity when the fixture is illuminated. Add shades to a light fixture and see the room transformed into a luxurious, richly textured interior.
The grasscloth shades are available in three natural hues and trimmed with fine bands of cloth or a simple rolled edge for a sophisticated, modern feel. Due to the natural material’s inherent texture, there is an organic knotty richness to their surfaces. In fact, the grasscloth used is made by hand of the finest weaves. Tiny telltale knots along the surface shows the touch of the human hand.
The block-printed shades are designed in six different color patterns in a pleated or drum style. The pattern is applied to the cotton with a hand-carved wooden block that is created to stamp the design onto the fabric. Each colored dye uses a unique block that can only be used to apply one single color and pattern. This hand process requires many blocks and skilled craftsmen to create the distinctive fabric.
A New England atelier crafts the marble paper shades in five colors with both vivid and pastel patterns. The saturation of the colors on the tapered and cylindrical shades are achieved by artistic hand manipulation. Colors and patterns will vary because they are created during an organic process that makes the paper special. The shades are trimmed with two layers of grosgrain ribbon and are the ultimate definition of artisanal.
