Whether you’re an interior designer or a retailer, Pinterest is a great platform to utilize to increase brand awareness and drive purchases among consumers. In Pinterest's 2017 year-end report, the platform noted that Pinterest users spend 27 percent more on home decor than non-users. And in even more good news for the industry, home-related pins saw a 75 percent increase last year.
So you know that Pinterest is the place to be when it comes to getting your products and brand in front of hungry buyers' eyes. But if you want to maximize the reach of your page and pins, you can take some steps to optimize them for SEO. Here are five steps you can take.
1. Confirm your website
While Pinterest won’t let just anyone verify their account for that coveted checkmark, you can confirm your website to set your page apart and build trust with your desired audience. When you confirm that you own your website, your profile picture will be added to any pin that came from your site, increasing the visibility and legitimacy of your business.
2. Make sure your boards are visible to search engines
This is another simple step that you should take to ensure you aren’t burying your Pinterest boards. If your boards aren’t discoverable, search engines won’t be able to categorize your content and people won’t be able to find it. Simply click on “Account Settings,” scroll to “Search Privacy” and make sure the “Secret” button is set to off. To check the settings of each board individually, you can click “Edit” on each board and make sure the search privacy slider is set to off.
3. Pin consistently
You can do everything else right, but if you don’t pin regularly and consistently, your pins won’t gain the amount of traction you want them to. So how often should you be pinning? CoSchedule recommends pinning at least 11 times a day, and recommends spreading your pins out throughout the day between 2 a.m. and 11 p.m. The site also recommends repinning at least five pieces of content from others every day. Eleven pins a day may seem like a lot, but you can take baby steps to get there. The important thing is that you set a clear, consistent number for each day or week and follow through on it.
4. Target keywords
Just as you would on your own website or other social media platforms, you can target keywords on Pinterest to attract eyes to your page. You can use tools like Google Keyword Planner, but one of the best ways to find keywords is to search different words in the Pinterest search bar to see what long-tail keywords it generates. Include keywords you want to target in your bio, your pin descriptions and in your board name and descriptions. Be careful of keyword-stuffing your pins—Pinterest can demote these pins and people won’t want to read the text if it looks spammy.
5. Use rich pins
If you haven’t yet, make sure to enable and start using rich pins on your page. Rich pins are enhanced with more information than regular pins, allowing you to include information like a preview of an article, the price of a product or its availability. Since rich pins have more content, they’re more likely to perform better in search rankings—and pinners will likely find them more useful and shareable.
